Why Locals Love Union Kitchen and Tap Gaslamp
Located in the vibrant heart of San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, Union Kitchen and Tap Gaslamp delivers an elevated American dining experience that beautifully balances bold flavors with thoughtful presentation. This thoughtfully curated menu offers a fresh take on classic favorites, perfect for food lovers seeking both comfort and creativity.
Start your day with their standout breakfast selections like the Green Omelette—a verdant medley of broccolini, spinach, scallions, and creamy goat cheese accented by basil pesto and cilantro that bursts with freshness. Or indulge in their Avocado Toast, a sophisticated rendition featuring grilled French sourdough generously layered with smashed avocado, cherry tomatoes, pickled onions, and perfectly poached eggs crowned with crispy garlic chips and “everything spice.” The Chicken & Waffle, with its crispy buttermilk fried chicken atop a cheddar and scallion cornbread waffle drizzled in a spicy-sweet Srirachamaple glaze, will transport you to Southern comfort food bliss.
For heartier appetites, the dinners shine with crowd-pleasers like the Union Burger, stacked high with aged white cheddar, cherrywood smoked bacon, and their signature Union Burger Sauce on a buttery brioche bun. Alternatively, spice enthusiasts will appreciate the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich, where fiery Nashville hot sauce meets tender buttermilk fried chicken and a cooling baby kale slaw. The B.L.T.A., layered with smoked bacon, smashed avocado, and fresh produce on country levain bread, offers a satisfying blend of textures and flavors. Don’t miss the indulgent Shrimp & Grits, a testament to soulful Southern cooking, rich and deeply comforting.
Complement your meal by sharing innovative sides like the Bacon Mac & Cheese, with fresh rigatoni swathed in sharp New York cheddar and crispy bacon, or try the Roasted Brussels Sprouts & Sweet Potato, where sriracha maple glaze and spiced pecans add an unexpected sweet heat and crunch that lingers delightfully on the palate. The Bourbon Glazed Apricots with Haricot Vert present a sophisticated balance of smoky, sweet, and savory notes, while the Pimento Cheese Potato Gratin is a creamy, golden-crusted marvel that invites slow savoring.
Union Kitchen and Tap’s atmosphere mirrors its culinary excellence: lively, warm, and undeniably inviting. Whether you're settling into cozy booths or catching a game on the screen over craft beers, the vibe feels thoroughly modern yet comfortably familiar. Guests consistently praise the friendly and efficient service, creating an experience that feels personal and attentive without rushing the moment. During events like Comic-Con, the bar livens up further with thematic cocktails, adding an extra layer of excitement and local flavor.

Union Kitchen & Tap has a lot going for it—strong flavors, good service, and an atmosphere that’s absolutely a vibe. The gumbo was the headline for me: rich, comforting, and clearly made with intention. Overall, the food landed well, and even the cornbread was close to being a win… but that’s also where the experience took a hit. The corn baked into the cornbread was unusually hard—so hard it felt like older corn was used instead of fresh. It distracted from what should’ve been a simple, satisfying side and honestly pulled focus from an otherwise excellent meal. That said, the staff was friendly and on point, and the space feels like the kind of place you actually want to hang out in—not just eat and leave. Big potential here. If the kitchen tightens up consistency on details like that cornbread, this becomes an easy repeat spot.

Ate here 7/25 Fast and friendly service. Only a five minute wait (esp during Comic-Con!). Booths were comfortable This place was on the pricier side for food (included a pic of menu). I ordered the short rib loaded fries and was surprised how much I got! I don't drink but they had Pokemon themed cocktails during Comic Con which I thought was pretty cool 4/5

Cool place, very pricey, but the food is great. I would not recommend the burger as it seems they like to cook it very well done which I don't personally like, but everything else was great. It's not incredibly affordable for the average consumer, though, so it is definitely more of a special occasion spot.

Watched Dodgers v Padres, had beer, great company, and great food - no complaints from me! I really recommend the sharable plates. It's not pictured but their Skillet Cornbread was my favorite. Pictures are the Creole Shrimp (loved the sauce but needed more bread) and Moroccan Bowl (I think) which was a hearty grilled chicken salad.

We're having dinner with my partner to Celebrate her birthday and we just picked up of what we like to eat. And also ask the servant who was assigned to us and the food that he suggested for us to order was very yummy. Can't wait to go back their again. And I would like to recommend this place to anybody.

I come to San Diego once a year every year. Normally, I prefer to try different places each time I come. Union Kitchen and Tap will be a stop on every future trip here. The food was delicious and well presented. Flavors were well balanced and complimented each other nicely. The staff was friendly and helpful - ready with recommendations when asked but not pushy otherwise. 10/10 experience.

Enjoyed dinner and some drinks here late night. The food was excellent, and the service was fantastic, both quick and friendly. The atmosphere was great, warm and fun, not so loud you couldn't hold a conversation without yelling. Overall, a great place to sit and enjoy a meal, or some drinks.

Visited this place for their Pokemon speakeasy. While the interior was nice and we got free Pokemon cards, the drinks were half-decent at best and we had to wait quite a while for the speakeasy. I definitely think it was a bit overhyped, and I hope the cocktails are of a higher quality next time around.
